AFL illicit drug policy a leader in the field

Australian Football League logoThe Australian Drug Foundation today spoke out at the Australian Football League's press conference in support of the AFL's illicit drug policy.

'The AFL's illicit drug policy is one of the most rigorous drug policies in sport internationally, and we praise their commitment to the health and welfare of their players,' said the ADF Chief Executive, John Rogerson. 'We're pleased to see them take steps to continue to develop a culture which supports players, parents and other members of the community to reduce the likelihood of drug problems.'

Mr Rogerson urged parents to use the publicity around the AFL drugs policy to discuss drug issues with their children.

Alcohol industry cannot be trustedAlcopops

New liquor industry sales data obtained by the Australian Drug Foundation shows the sales of RTDs have plummeted by 36% and sales of spirits have hardly changed, increasing by only 3.4%, a far cry from the 46% increase in the recent Liquor Merchants Association of Australia data. Overall, this new data shows an decrease in all alcohol consumption of 11.4% when compared to the same period last year, a strong indicator that the alcopop tax is having a positive impact.

John Rogerson, ADF CEO, says: "These figures prove the alcohol industry has been trying to mislead the Australian community on the alcohol issue, just like the tobacco industry did in the 1980s. The alcohol industry can no longer be trusted and should have no role in developing more effective policy to reduce alcohol related harm in Australia."
