Hosting parties and functions

GoodHost is our toolkit for organisations wanting to manage the risks associated with alcohol when holding workplace functions and parties. The majority of alcohol-related incidents in the workplace originate at parties and other events. A work function is an important way for a company to thank employees and celebrate, but it’s also a high risk event for every organisation.

GoodHost objectives

The GoodHost toolkit will help you to:

  • Meet your duty of care and health and safety obligations
  • Reduce potential liability
  • Minimise the risk of intoxication and alcohol-related harm
  • Enhance general safety for all attendees
  • Organise a good celebration while minimising the likelihood of intoxication

How does it work?

GoodHost consists of a series of guidelines (87 in total) and supporting checklists for event organisers. The aim of these guidelines is to help the organiser reduce the likelihood that guests will get drunk in the way that they design the event. The toolkit covers topics such as:

  • Supply of alcohol: considering how available alcohol is to guests, for example number of bars, location of bars, whether waiters are offering drinks around.
  • Alcohol service and bar management: how and when alcohol should be served to reduce the risk of intoxication, making non-alcoholic/low alcohol drinks readily available.
  • Supply of food: appropriate catering to reduce the risk of rapid intoxication and help give the event a focus other than drinking.
  • Security and other protective measures: managing guest behaviour and ‘gate crashers’.
  • Safe transport policy: arranging safe transport options for all guests.
  • Promotion of the event: communicating the expected behaviour to all guests.

As part of the GoodHost program, the Alcohol and Drug Foundation can also observe the event and provide feedback on how you can improve the safety and success of your next function.

Testimonials

Both events went off without a hitch. I am very glad we undertook the ADF GoodHost checklist and accreditation. It is a fantastic initiative and I endeavour to use the checklist and guidelines for further events.
