05/05/25 - Australian AI chatbot for trusted alcohol and drug information launched

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) has launched dib, a purpose-built chatbot developed to deliver accessible, accurate and compassionate guidance on alcohol and other drugs.

A first of its kind in Australia, dib is anonymous and non-judgmental, providing clear, evidence-based answers drawn directly from the ADF’s website, in everyday language. Simply type your questions to receive reliable, detailed responses with helpful follow-up prompts when needed.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s CEO, Dr Erin Lalor AM, said that finding reliable information on alcohol and other drugs can be challenging – and dib was here to fill that gap.

“Traditional health websites are often hard to navigate, and while general AI tools can help, their accuracy isn’t guaranteed. This is where dib steps in, delivering dependable guidance every time,” Dr Lalor said.

“By combining advanced AI with our evidence-based content and strong security measures, dib offers confidential support for those seeking help, and clear, credible insights for health practitioners, educators, and researchers.”

Before its launch, dib underwent thorough development and testing, including feedback from over 200 Australians, with 97 per cent agreeing it’s easy to use. A clinical advisory group ensured accuracy, while rigorous security checks, including regular monitoring and audits, guarantee a safe, reliable experience.

St Vincent’s Hospital Alcohol and Drug Service Senior Clinician, Alana Story, who sat on the advisory group, said input from medical professionals, allied health staff and those with lived experience ensure dib provides timely, evidence-based information.

“Knowing where to start looking for support can feel overwhelming, and motivation to seek help can shift moment to moment. dib bridges the gap between searching for information and finding the right support, offering personalised, 24/7 guidance,” Ms Story said.

“It lays out options in a clear, guided way without flooding people with too much information, so people feel more confident and empowered to take the next step when they’re ready.

dib’s language is neutral and encouraging – it feels conversational, not clinical, which helps people feel comfortable engaging and getting the information they need without fear of judgment.”

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation is proud to launch this innovative tool, building on its commitment to providing accessible, accurate, and compassionate alcohol and other drug information.
