25/06/2024: ADF supports pill testing trial announced for Victoria as part of suite of measures to reduce drug harms

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation (ADF) supports the Victorian Government’s announcement of a pill testing trial to reduce the risks and harms associated with illicit drug use.

In a first for Victoria, the trial will take place this coming summer, giving festival-goers the opportunity to test potentially dangerous substances before taking them.

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s CEO, Dr Erin Lalor AM welcomed the announcement, stressing the need for young people and parents to be fully informed about drugs and the risks associated with their use.

“We know that pill testing can save lives and plays an important role in reducing the risk of drug-related harm such as overdose,” Dr Lalor said.

“It gives people who have already purchased drugs and are intending to use them, the opportunity to test the drug’s strength and key ingredients, in a non-judgmental setting.  And at the same time, it’s a unique opportunity to provide them with the information they need to reduce their risk of harm.”

The Alcohol and Drug Foundation views pill testing trials as part of a range of measures to prevent and minimise drug-related harms and to provide safer and supportive environments for people who use drugs.

“The reality is, new substances are continually entering the market, so ensuring people have timely, evidence-based information is crucial to preventing and reducing harm,” Dr Lalor continued.

“Pill testing is a positive step for Victoria and should be part of a suite of measures, including greater investment in education around drug use, with clear information about the effects of specific drugs, and their risks.

“We know that other pill testing trials in Australia have been successful in detecting drugs mixed with dangerous substances and that when people use the service, they are more likely to ditch their drugs or take less after learning the results. So, the ADF is really looking forward to seeing the results from Victoria’s trial.”
